Internet Business and Marketing Trends

Web Courses Popular With College Students

In an article from the associated press they report that more students are enrolling in web courses. Experts thought the trend had little room for growth. The numbers show they were wrong.

3.2 million people took online courses last fall. In 2005 the number had increased by 850,000. Up 40 percent from the previous year.

Eighty percent of all the students are undergraduates they are also more likely to be a bit older, working and have families.

The advantages to online learning are that colleges have a wider enrollment. For the student its convenience. The downside to this is the face-to-face contact with the professor.

In some cases that could be an advantage for the student. Depending on the personality of the professor and the interest in the subject matter.

Another downside could be the socialization factor. If you are a hermit you probably would like online courses. Also if you are like me and can remember having that annoying person in class with you who were so pretentious whenever they opened their mouth you wanted to vomit then online would be a good way to go.

Still there is something to be said for the traditional classroom setting. Either way web courses are here to stay.

I don’t think the population needs to further withdraw. Socialization provides a better opportunity to absorb and exchange ideas (in an academic setting) in my opinion. Although, I do recall the “genious” of the class. Just make sure the bile gets on him/her.
