You are right to doubt the effect of the nofollow attribute. Maybe the big three want us think nofollow doesn't work.

I have commented on some major blogs earlier with my name and the other blog URL and the blog hit PR5 easily. Of course, I had some clear links, but it leaves room for an experiment.

Not only does it not discourage spammers, I don't even know if Google really treats the nofollow the way people think. All this talk of nofollow made me do a little experiment. Let me know if you have any similar experiences...

In Wordpress the nofollow attribute is only automatically put on links that are included in comments, to discourage spammers (not that that works!) If you link to a blogpost from within a blogpost or in a linklist the link is a good one. Also, there are plugins that strip out the nofollow attribute if you wish to use them.

Apparently Arnie also didn't realize that his spammy comment would be nofollowed on this blog as well. I assumed that all search engine marketers used firefox extensions such as Search Status to automatically highlight links with the nofollow tag on them. I have caught a few people trying to sneak this onto links they supposedly gave to a client. Here is an example of someone I caught "accidentally" doing this and "claiming" that he will fix it (although it still has the nofollow).

As a search engine marketing company that focuses on linkbait and other one way linking campaigns for our clients, I found this article to be very interesting. I actually did not know about the WordPress nofollow tag. Thanks for the insights.
