SES San Jose Women’s Luncheon

There was a time, and it wasn’t that long ago really, where one could go to a show like SES and come away thinking that there just weren’t many women in the industry at all. Rebecca Lieb once joked to me that there was never any lines for the women’s restrooms at search conferences.

I suspect that’s why a few years ago the women of search started organizing a little ladies-only luncheon. No doubt as a reprieve of sorts from being surrounded by a bunch of nerdy search-dudes all week.

Times have changed though. Especially in the past couple of years. Now there are almost as many women as men at these shows. The Women’s Luncheon is still alive and well though - they just need bigger tables now.

So if you meet the criteria, which I suppose consists of being; a) involved somehow in search and b) a woman, you should go check it out.

Li Evans from SearchMarketingGurus.com tells me all you need to do is hit the SES San Jose Women’s Luncheon page and follow the instructions to RSVP.

Maybe I’ll crash it this year… or just go in drag under an alias.

Blogs in Your SEO Mix: A Case Study

Everybody that hasn’t been living under a rock for the past 3 years has pretty well caught on to the fact that blogs are kind of a big deal. SEO people, who spend a big part of their day thinking Google-y thoughts, know that blogs are beyond a big deal for Google.

But don’t just take my words for it.  Lee LeFever has recently posted a Case Study on his experiences with adding blogs to his SEO mix.  He has some rather profound results to share, such as:

“Within two months of starting the weblog, I noticed that searching for “Weblogs and Business” (a category name) yielded a #1 ranking on Google. From this point on, I saw each of my category names grow in rank on Google.”

His post is well worth checking out.  He discusses his results in some detail and provides a list of his top 5 ‘lessons learned’.  There really isn’t anything much in his list that you probably haven’t heard before, but they are good guidelines as his results with them will attest.

SEO: The Game

The folks over at GSINC have created what is — as far as I know — the first SEO video game. It’s basically just a little Flash Boxing game where you are pitted against the likes of ‘Hidden Text Kid’, ‘Cloaking Monster’ and a few other cleverly named SEO nogoodniks. The ring announcer bears a striking resemblance Mr. Cutts from Google.

I breezed thru the first 4 opponents; Hidden Text Kid, Keyword Stuffer, Duplicate Content Girl and the Cloaking Monster. However, Mr. Redirect beat me to a pulp. He’s a shifty one and he has a mean uppercut to boot.

I have demanded a rematch, but I haven’t heard back from his people yet.

If you have a few minutes to kill, you should give it a go.
