Social networks grab 40 percent of mobile web

Norwegian browser maker Opera Software said in its ‘State of the Mobile Web’ report that nearly 40 percent of global mobile web traffic hits the likes of MySpace and Facebook. It’s even higher in the United States.

In places like the US, South Africa,  and Indonesia, social networking pulls in over 60 percent of the web attention from mobile devices. Opera CEO Jon S. von Tetzchner said in the Mobile Web report how the company prefers to view online content as being part of “One Web,” where there is “no difference in the information that is available to you whether you use the fastest computer or a refurbished mobile phone.”

Opera published several lists of countries and the ten most popular destinations. MySpace tops the list for the US:

www.myspace.com
www.google.com
www.mocospace.com
www.yahoo.com
www.facebook.com
www.live.com
www.hi5.com
www.wikipedia.org
www.itsmy.com
www.ebay.com

More than 63% of U.S. Web traffic on mobile phones is to social networks, tying it with Indonesia for the number one spot, Opera noted.

In China, Sina, Baidu, and Google.cn occupy the top three mobile slots, while visitors in India preferred Orkut, Google, and Yahoo Mobile.
