Five companies absorb your Internet activity
Millions of people in the United States hit the Internet, but only a quintet of web property owners pull in the majority of those surfers on an ongoing basis.
Metrics firm comScore looked at an audience of 189 million Internet users from its sampling and panel-based perspective, and out of those 189 million people, only a few businesses consistently drew their online attention in great numbers.
If you spend any significant time online, you can probably guess at those top five properties for July 2008 in the comScore Media Metrix. Out of those 189 million+ browsing folk, Google’s sites pulled in 141.5 million in the month, followed by its search ad partner, Yahoo, whose sites drew 140.3 million.
In perspective, very nearly 3 out of 4 American Net users stopped by Google and/or Yahoo in July. Microsoft’s sites drew 120 million, while much-discussed potential takeover target AOL picked up 111 million.
After those four, Fox Interactive Media, as in MySpace and other properties, came the closest to nine-digit visitors, but ended up with 88 million for the month. That’s still a respectable chunk of traffic to the Murdoch empire.

Sounds like dominant media companies redux…
CBS, ABC, NBC, Viacom, Disney, say hello to Google, Yahoo, etc.
